The GOYA Program has been developed by Quay Street Physiotherapy with the goal of educating and assisting people in making long term and sustainable improvements to their health and fitness. Delivered over 6 weeks, the program promotes a holistic approach to health improvement through a combination of varied exercise classes, education and nutritional information. The unique distinction of this program is the presence of at least one Physiotherapist at each of the 20 different exercise classes, ensuring a safe environment for people to exercise in. With this difference, we are able to target people suffering from the functional limitations of chronic pain and injuries, presenting them with alternative activities that can be completed effectively and without pain.
All participants complete a one on one session with a Physiotherapist prior to starting to ensure that we are aware of their goals and limitations, increasing the safety of the program. Many of our classes are run by our Physiotherapists, with outside instructors providing classes as varied as Boxing, Tai-Chi, Pilates, Yoga and Gym Circuits. A dietician is also present during the program to provide group and individualised advice and education on diet and nutrition.
From its inception to the time of writing, the GOYA Program has helped almost 200 Bundaberg people to achieve a healthier lifestyle, with many of our participants completing the program again to continue to progress their health and fitness goals. In 2009, we were the winners of the Wide Bay Division of the Healthy Queensland awards and a finalist in the state wide division. We regularly receive stories / letters from previous participants detailing the positive life changes that they still experience and love, thanks to the kick start they received completing our program.
As a result of the nature of the program, we would be unable to provide anything without the support of many people. In particular, Coral Coast Pharmacy has been with us as a major sponsor from the very first program, allowing us to turn a simple idea into a successful and award winning program. Their help and support has been invaluable, allowing us to continue to provide a high quality but affordable program to the community.
